Can RTX 2060 run 4K?
Let’s start with a short and direct answer:
Although RTX 2060 is not primarily designed for 4K, it can certainly run it, but the performance will vary depending on the game. However, you will have decent performance on most games in medium settings. Watching 4K movies will not be a problem with this GPU.
You’re in luck if you want to display a lot of information on your desktop or watch a 4K video. It supports HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2, so if you have a suitable monitor, you can stream Netflix in 4K resolution or install an Ultra Blu-Ray disc player and software to watch discs in 4K resolution.
Will it be able to run the 4K games you wish to play? It depends. If you’re looking to compete in multiplayer first-person shooters, forget it; it won’t be able to keep your frame rate high enough. If you play older games, you may be able to keep up if you disable some of the fancy visual elements.
You’ll be satisfied if your gaming consists of boardgame adaptations where the key is seeing a lot of information on the screen rather than smooth motion.
Will you actually employ the ray tracing characteristics denoted by the R in RTX? Dubious. The ray tracing performance of the RTX 2070 has already been deemed poor for gaming, and 2060 will be far worse. RTX 2060 user experiences at 1440 and 4K
During my research, I came across one user who has this card. He says:
“Owner of a Ryzen 5 2600 and an RTX 2060 with an AOC AGON 1440p 144Hz display – extremely pleased so far. I primarily play eSports shooters, with RPGs and other fillers thrown in for good measure.
For eSports titles, I can easily balance about 1080p/1440p 144Hz, and 1440p 60Hz still provides me a sufficient level of various in-game graphical settings for RPGs and other games to look excellent.
I’ve only had this configuration for about a month, so I haven’t had much coverage of various titles, but it’s a delight to use for what I’m doing right now.”
Here is the report from one RTX 2060 user playing at 4K:
“My RTX 2060 laptop can connect to two 4K/60Hz displays and one 32′′ 1440p/180Hz monitor at the same time, making it a stunning portable gaming machine at a reasonable price. This system can play any game in either 4K or 1440p resolution.
Elder Scrolls 4: Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Witcher 3, and other previous major video games can be safely played at 4K/60fps. It can also record 4K games without the use of a capture card.
However, it only has 6GB of VRAM, which drastically limits its 4K gaming capabilities. As a result, it cannot run some of the most graphically demanding games in 4K resolution. Far Cry 6, for example, requires more VRAM to run in 4K than Far Cry 2/3/4/5.”
Another report comes from a computer science major who also has this card:
“As an owner of the RTX 2060 from its release with a 4K monitor, I’d say no. The RTX 2060 is quite likely to be capable of running 4K in older or lighter titles (including CS: GO). However, due to its VRAM constraints, it struggles to run the most recent titles at 4K.
The RTX 2060 performs roughly identically in these games to the GTX 1080 at 1440p. However, once you exceed 1440p, the RTX 2060 simply cannot keep up.
If you plan on doing a lot of 4K gaming, you should, at the very least, consider the RTX 2060S. It has the extra VRAM you’ll require.”
Another one:
“I have the card and have run some respectable benchmarks. Overall, it “may” work, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Most AAA games will require you to run them on medium settings. Having said that, they are still attractive.
It will operate at roughly 35 frames per second. It’s achievable if you add some blur and lock frames at 30. However, if you have a decent 4K monitor for gaming/etc., you can also acquire 2080. Personally, I would stick with 1440p.”
Final verdict
The RTX 2060 is capable of running most games at 1440p with good frame rates and high graphics settings. However, it may struggle to run games at 4k resolution with the same level of performance.
If your main goal is 4k gaming, you may want to consider a more powerful GPU, such as the RTX 3060, RTX 3070, RTX 3080, or RTX 2060 Super which has 8GB. If 1440p gaming is your main goal, the RTX 2060 should be sufficient for most games, but you may still want to consider purchasing a more powerful GPU if you want to run games at the highest possible settings or achieve the highest possible frame rates.
